Chicago Transit Authority ordered 200 PCC Rapid Transit Cars from St.-Louis Car Co for $7.85 million and first batch, numbered 6001-6130 was delivered in 1950 and 1951. Only these cars had the Mercury Green stripe around the standee windows and twin headlights below the front windows. The remaining 70 cars were delivered also in 1951. The 6000s entered service in October 1950 on the Logan Sq.-Loop route. 28-inch instead of 25-inch wheels were used on Clark B-2 trucks and the control was a higher-capacity Westinghouse accelerator, adapted from surface car experience. First 200 cars were very successful and CTA started a program of converting its postwar PCC streetcars into rapid transit cars. Between 1953 and 1960 570 'Green Hornet' PCCs were reincarnated as subway-elevating rolling stock.
