Nippon Sharyo built 49 cars of 4000-series, first of them was delivered in June 1949. Cars 4002-4021 were some different having wide beltrail, other cars had the same body as 6000-series, except for tail lights. They used many parts from old wooden cars of 4000-series, such as D11 trucks, electrical equipment etc. Cars 4045-4049 were built to same specification as 6000-series with D10 trucks. All cars of 4001-4049 group were in operation by February 1950. There were two more groups in the 4000-series, cars 4050-4103 were built by Teikoku Sharyo company, beign equipped mainly with D11 trucks, (except for cars 4071,4073,4075 and 4076 with D10 trucks), and 4104-4117 series, these cars were built by Kentetsu company with D10 trucks. Original paint scheme was plain green and cream, but starting from early 50s, the new variaton was introduced on the 4000-series ('Kintaro' paint), with cream 'V' on the dash. The wooden window frames were painted brown in this time. The trolley bases remained on the roofs of the cars after conversion to the bow collector operation.
