Starting from 1972, the MBTA had converted the ex-Dallas PCC, consigned to the isolated Mattapan route (13 cars), to the single-end cars through removal of the front trolley pole and rear operator control. They were painted red to signify service on the Mattapan-Ashmont line, an extension of the Red Line subway.
