In June 1940 Philadelphia Transportation Co. placed an order to St.-Louis Car Co. (Job 1625) for 80 PCC cars for two-man routes 13 Chester Ave. and 42 Spruce St. They were delivered in December 1940 and January 1941 and were numbered 2501-2580 (A-36 class). The numbers beginning with 2501 were reserved for all further PTC two-man PCC cars. The 2500s were also equipped with treadles to open the center doors so they could be used for one-man operation. Starting from late 50s this series was slowly converted to one-man cars and the conductor booths were removed, last two-man car in Philadelphia was 2564; it was convered in December 1965.
