In June 1940 Philadelphia Transportation Co. placed an order to St.-Louis Car Co. (Job 1625) for 50 PCC cars for one-man route 56 Erie-Torresdale, which were delivered in February and March 1941, beign numbered 2031-2080 (A-37 class). As first Philadelphia PCCs, these cars were delivered in attractive silver/cream/blue livery. Route 56 was one of the heaviest city routes during the war and the PCC fleet help to get PTC through the years of hostilities. The A-37 class had a long service life in Philadelphia, last of them were withdrawn only in 1982.
