In 1915 car 3556 was built for Pittsburgh Railways Co. by Standard Steel Co. to design of the P.N.Jones and became the prototype for almost 1,000 cars bought by PRCo between 1915 and 1927 from different car builders. The low floor on these cars sloped down between the trucks to centre doors but even last cars built in 1927 still had the obsolete 'deck' roof. Between 1924 and 1926 the PRCo received 243 new Jones low-floor cars from Pressed Steel Car Co. (5000-5099 series; delivered in 1925) and Osgood-Bradley (5100-5159 and 5200-5282 series, delivered in 1924-26). These cars double front door (later most of the old cars were rebuilt to this configuration) and they arrived in the new Orange paint instead of old Tuscan Red. These cars were intended for multiple-unit operation and were fitted with Westinghouse HL control and Westinghouse automatic couplers. When train opeation was ended by 1937, many of these cars received Van Dorn couplers. The 5000-series cars were equipped for optional one- or two-man operation, and a conductor was carried only during rush hours or on the busy routes. Sixty-five cars of the 5400-5464 series, built in 1924 also by Osgood-Bradley were of the same design, but were non-MU cars and were built for one-man operation but with conductor's stands in the middle of the cars. The same company also built cars of the 5500-5549 series in 1926-27; they had different design of the rear windows. The Jones low-floor cars were the mainstay of the system for many years; most of the cars of the 5000-series were scrapped between 1951 and 1956.
