The first Highway Post Office Bus was built by White Motor Co. and this bus made its first trip on February 10, 1941, serving routes between Washington D.C. and Harisonburg, VA. Highway Post Office buses worked as moving mail sorting centers; clerks sorted mail in the forward portion of the bus; bags of mail were stacked in the back. The Crown Body and Coach Corporation of Los Angeles, CA, built its first Highway Post Office bus in 1955 using underfloor mounted engine which permitted the H.P.O to have a clear floor area. In the same year the first tandem-axle bus was built by Crown; the Crown Cargo Coach with bus front and trailer body was also started soon. It was used to produce a dual 40-foot H.P.Os in 60s. In 70s, changes in the organization of the postal service called for less reliance on sorting mail enroute. The last Highway Post Office run was made on June 30, 1974.
