The Third Avenue Railway System (TARS) established 'Surface Transportation Corporation of New York' in 1924 to operate bus feeder lines and eventually used the company to operate buses over its former streetcar lines. In October 1954 the Surface Transportation Corp. was one of the first Customers of new Mack C-49 buses (ten buses, numbered 2990-2999) and ordered 28 more (2962-2989) for delivery in September 1956. These coaches were delivered in Surface Transportation red and cream livery. At the same year, the New York City Omnibus Corporation bought out Third Avenue Transit Copr. and had Surface Transportation sell its routes to NYCO (which changed its name to Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc.) Last ten Macks were ordered by Surface Transit Inc. in 1958, they were numbered 3000-3009 and were delivered in green and cream Fifth Avenue livery and had push out rear exit doors. The new livery was also applied to all other Surface Transit buses. The large Macks were used mainly on routes M101 Third Avenue and M104 42d St-Broadway. A subsidiary of the New York City Transit Authority, the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTOA) was created in 1962 to take over bus service for the bankrupt Fifth Avenue Coach Company and Surface Transit, Inc. routes. In 1968 the NYCTA, and its subsidiary, the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (“MaBSTOA”), were placed under the control of, and are now 'affiliates' of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a public benefit corporation chartered by the New York State Legislature in 1965. [This special Custom paint order model have all features of the Surface Transportation Macks but use the slighlty shorter California version (274 1/2' wheelbase) body as a base].
