In 1949 Transit Research Corp. developed a new PCC styling that featured double-width side windows and in June 1950 Boston's Metropolitan Transit Authority placed an order for 50 new PCC cars of the improved design with large picture windows to Pullman-Standard (order W6892). Fifty cars, numbered 3272-3321, were delivered in 1951 and assigned to the busy Beacon Street line between Cleveland Circle and Lechmere. Because they were four inches wider than other Boston PCCs and had the unique third generation General Electric control system, they were trained only with themselves up to three cars. In 1959 they were refurbished and equipped with new signs for base service on the new Highland Branch to Riverside.In August 1965, the MBTA adopted the color coded rapid transit line concept which created the Red Line, Blue line etc. and Green became the color for the surface lines.
