The Honolulu Rapid Transit Co. started the trolley coach opeation in January 1938 on the Waikiki-Liliha line with thrity Brill T40S coaches dubbed the 'silver fleet'. The second trolley coach line was added in 1941, just a few months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Sixty more Brill coaches (this time 44SMT model) were ordered for this line. During the war the ridership was very high and the company ordered 25 additional ACF-Brill coaches, which were delivered in May-June 1945 and were numbered 591-615 in the Honolulu roster. At first, they were intended to replace the buses on the Nuuanu-Punahou line, however this line was not converted and post-war coaches were used on the existing routes until the final system closure in June 1957.
