On 3 September 1939 Britain declared a war to Germany and the same month London Transport ordered 25 more trolleybuses from Leyland in order to meet the increase of the riderships as well as possible replacement for vehicles which could be lost in bombing. This class was very close to K1/K2-group, but the side lamps were mounted on the front panels and the route number stencil holders were omitted. The K3-class, numbered 1672-1696 (GGP 672-696) had the English Electric control equipment. The first five K3s entered service in October 1940 and delivery was completed in December. For almost the whole of their existence the K3s were concentrated at Edmonton depot.
