San Diego Electric Railway ordered twenty-five PCC cars from St.Louis Car Co. in July 1937, became the first property on the West coast to receive PCC cars. They were shipped to San Diego in March-June 1937 and entered service on July 12, 1937. The company ordered three more cars in September 1937, they were delivered in January 1938. New cars provided complete service on routes 1 Fifth Ave., 2 Broadway-Brooklyn Heights and 3 Mission Hills, plus Sunday and holiday service on route 7 East San Diego. Route 11 Adams ave. received PCC cars in September 1938. Some features of the San Diego PCCs were unique. They had a warning lamp which was mounted on the front corner on the motorman's side and the trolley poles were mounted on 'bridges' after 1940 (initially cars were equipped with extra long trolley poles because of the extreme height of the SDER trolley wire) for better contact and operation. The livery was very attractive with pea green body, Pullman green beltrail, brick red roof and cream windows and diamonds. After the war the bus conversion program was started and in April 1949 San Diego became the first city having PCC cars to completely abandon rail service. Twenty cars were sold to El Paso City Lines in Texas in 1950 and 1952 and eight remaining cars were sold to scrap, but two were preserved.
