In September 1949, London Transport Feltham tram No.2099 was sent to Leeds for trial. It entered the service in December, still having its London number and was renumbered 501 only in August 1950. At total, Leeds acquired 90 cars from London, numbered 501-590 (seven cars never entered service and retained its London livery; they were scrapped in 1956). With ex-London Felthams, the Leeds fleet colors were changed from blue to crimson; there were many paint variations on the first cars, but the final livery was adopted in early 50s (in mid-50s it was simplified by omitting the stripes). Initially the whole class was splited between Swinegate and Torre Road depots. The new tram abandonment programme was adopted in June 1953 and when some routes operating by Felthams were closed in mid-50s, these cars were fitted with modified sanding gear in July 1957 and they started to operate over Middleton circle. The remaining four routes of the Leeds system was closed in 7 November 1959.
