In 1918 J.G.Brill company supplied 130 heavy, steel 4-motor double-end cars known as 'Hog Island' cars or simply 'Hogs' to Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company. These cars, equipped for multiple-unit operation, were built for operation to the Hog Island ship yard. The 4000-class (or A-10) consists of 130 cars, numbered 4000-4129. Following the closure of the ship yard, the cars were re-equipped for single car operation, many of them were stored. In 1942 fifty four cars of this class were rehabilitated by PTC; couplers were removed and PC-5 control system for multiple unit operation was also removed and replaced by K-type standard controllers. These cars were called as 'Suburban K Remodeled' (SKR) and lasted in service until 1955.
